Professor Wei Lu, an adjunct researcher at the Beijing Institute of Quantum Information Science and a professor at Tsinghua University, and the CEPC accelerator of the Institute of High Energy have made a major original breakthrough in the field of antimatter wake acceleration research, and the related positron wake acceleration scheme was published in Physical Review Letters and was selected as an editor's recommendation paper (Figure 1). Since the concept of wake acceleration was proposed for forty years, there has been a lack of a principled solution for how to achieve high-quality positron acceleration stably and efficiently, which is the most critical part of wake acceleration to a new high-energy collider in the future. The reviewers of Physical Review Letters gave a high evaluation of this work, believing that the scheme "is an important step towards stable positron acceleration, breaking the inherent conceptual framework, and is expected to become the cornerstone of future positron acceleration technology." ” (This is a significant step towards stable positron acceleration and in my opinion, this concept must be published as it is an out-of-the-box solution and might become a cornerstone for the positron acceleration technique.)

Particle accelerators and colliders are key means for human exploration of the origin and composition of matter in the microscopic world, and about one-third of the Nobel Prizes in physics directly benefit from particle accelerator-related tools [1]. In 2012, the discovery of the Higgs boson was made at the Large Hadron Collider LHC, which has a circumference of 27 kilometers at the European Center for Nuclear Computing (CERN). In-depth and precise study of the Higgs boson is the next major goal of particle physics. In the 2020 European Strategy for Particle Physics, CERN clearly states that the construction of the Higgs Factory, based on the electron-positron collider, is the highest priority goal of particle physics in the future [2].

The construction of the Higgs plant is a challenge to the limits of human science and engineering capabilities, and international competition is fierce. As early as 2005, the International Linear Collider (ILC) scheme began to be thoroughly demonstrated. With the discovery of the Higgs particle, the ring collider scheme has attracted attention again. In September 2012, scientists from the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences took the lead in proposing the Chinese scheme CEPC for the ring electron-positron collider. Later, CERN scientists also proposed a future ring collider scheme FCC-EE, whose basic structure is very similar to CEPC. After 6 years of in-depth research, the CEPC Working Group officially released the CEPC Conceptual Design Report in 2018 [3], which systematically explained the advantages of the ring scheme over the linear collider in terms of performance and cost. In order to make full use of the latest accelerator technology to reduce the scale and cost of CEPC, the CEPC accelerator team worked with Professor Wei Lu's team in 2017 to explore the possibility of using plasma wake accelerator as a CEPC high-energy injector, and published the preliminary plan in the CEPC Conceptual Design Report in the form of an appendix. Interestingly, this coincides with the 2020 European Strategy for Particle Physics, which listed plasma wake accelerator technology as a key technology for the future development of colliders.

Plasma wake acceleration is a breakthrough technology that has developed rapidly in recent years, with an ultra-high acceleration gradient of 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of traditional microwave accelerator technology, which is expected to greatly reduce the scale and construction cost of large-scale high-energy accelerators. Especially in the field of electron accelerators, wake acceleration has made a series of major breakthroughs, and there are feasible solutions close to the collider's beam parameters in terms of key indicators such as energy, acceleration efficiency and beam quality (Figure 2). However, for the electron's antimatter, positrons, how to obtain high-quality acceleration similar to electron acceleration is a key challenge that has been unsolved. The Advanced Acceleration Development Strategy Report released by the US Department of Energy in 2016 clearly stated that the biggest challenge facing high-energy colliders based on wake acceleration is to "understand and verify positron acceleration" [4].

Under the traction of the CEPC high-energy plasma injector research, the joint team of Tsinghua University and the CEPC accelerator of the Institute of High Energy carried out systematic and in-depth continuous exploration on the key challenge of positron acceleration, and was the first to discover an original scheme that can achieve high-efficiency and high-quality positron acceleration in the world. This scheme cleverly uses the interaction between the hollow plasma structure and the asymmetric driving electron beam to obtain a stable wake structure that can be used for positron acceleration. On this basis, the high-efficiency uniform acceleration of the positron beam is achieved by the self-consistent action between the positron beam and the plasma wake boundary layer electrons (Figure 3). Once the proposal was proposed, it received great attention from international peers and was generally regarded as a major conceptual breakthrough in the field of wake acceleration.

A major breakthrough in "antimatter acceleration" research

Recently, Professor Minlin Zhong's research group of the School of Materials Science of Tsinghua University used the laser micro-nano manufacturing method to prepare a high-efficiency thin liquid film evaporation surface with high photothermal evaporation efficiency, and further proposed a composite configuration ultra-thin liquid absorbent core structure to realize the all-laser preparation of one of the thinnest (0.22mm) high-efficiency heat dissipation ultra-thin vapor chambers (VCs) for smartphones.

With the rapid development of 5G and AI technology, the reduction of chip process scale and the improvement of computing performance, the heat generated per unit area of terminal electronic devices rises rapidly, and how to achieve rapid heat dissipation and effective temperature control in the high hot area of the chip is of great significance to ensure the stable operation of high-performance computing and smart phones. Based on the principle of phase change, the high-efficiency heat sink device, vapor chamber (VC) can quickly and evenly transfer the heat at the hot spot, and has been widely used in various brands of mobile phones. However, with the increase in the power density of devices and the continuous reduction of the internal space brought about by the ultra-thinning of mobile phones, the demand for high-performance ultra-thin vapor chambers (VCs) in the industry is becoming more and more urgent, and their research and development is becoming more and more difficult.

The inside of the soaking plate realizes rapid heat transfer through the phase change cycle of working fluid evaporation, transportation and condensation. Aiming at the capillary evaporation process inside the soaking plate, Professor Minlin Zhong's team used laser method to prepare a super-absorbent composite micro-nanostructure surface with a three-stage capillary path on the copper sheet, which overcame the inherent contradiction between thin liquid film and low flow rate, realized continuous and controllable evaporation of large-area 3D thin liquid film, and greatly improved the surface evaporation efficiency. The evaporator achieves a double-sided photohot water evaporation efficiency of 3.33 kg·m-2·h-1 under direct sunlight, and exhibits excellent electric evaporation efficiency and evaporative cooling performance. The evaporation surface preparation process is relatively simple and controllable, highly repeatable, and can be prepared in batches, which can be integrated into a variety of energy systems to realize multi-scenario evaporation function, and has a wide range of application potential.

As the thickness of 5G smartphones continues to decrease, the thickness of the vapor chamber and the internal space are also constantly compressed. Theoretical calculations show that when the cavity thickness in the vapor chamber is reduced to 0.3mm, the gas-liquid transmission resistance will increase significantly, and the heat transfer performance of the ultra-thin vapor chamber (VC) is extremely deteriorated, so the preparation of 0.3mm vapor chamber with good heat dissipation performance faces great technical challenges. Professor Zhong Minlin's team proposed the design and cooperation scheme of zonal micro-nano structure in the evaporation zone, transport area and condensation area, developed a new method for the preparation of ultra-thin soaking plates by all-laser, and prepared a composite configuration ultra-thin liquid suction core by laser technology, which realized the optimization of capillary evaporation performance and gas-liquid transport efficiency at the same time, and achieved a high equivalent thermal conductivity of 12032 W/(m⋅K) under the overall thickness of the vapor chamber only 0.22mm. It provides a new idea for the internal structure design and large-scale engineering preparation of ultra-thin vapor chamber below 0.3mm. The team used the all-laser method to prepare a 0.22mm ultra-thin vapor chamber for the first time in the world, and it is also one of the thinnest high-efficiency heat dissipation vapor chambers (VC) known.

Related results include "Boosting water evaporation via continuous formation of 3D thin film through triple-level super-wicking routes" and "Laser microfabrication of composite configuration extremely thin vapor chambers for efficient heat dissipation" (Laser Microstructuring of extremely-thin vapor chamber with hybrid configuration for excellent heat dissipation), recently published in the internationally important journals Materials Horizons and Energy Conversion and Management Management).

Guochen Jiang, a 2019 doctoral student at the School of Materials Science of Tsinghua University, is the first author of the two papers, Professor Minlin Zhong of the School of Materials is the corresponding author of the two papers, and Assistant Researcher Peixun Fan is the second corresponding author of the paper published in Materials Vision, and the co-authors of the paper also include Hongjun Zhang, senior engineer and postdoctoral fellow Ze Tian, doctoral students Changhao Chen ,Xinyu Hu,Lizhong Wang, Rui Peng and Daizhou Li. This work is supported by the National Key R&D Program of China and the Independent Research Program of Tsinghua University.
